When the Switch emerged, it was like a knight in shining armor rescuing Nintendo from the disaster that was the Wii U. With an impressive lineup of first-party games, a robust indie presence, and innovative hardware, the 2-in-1 console charmed gamers with its portability, home play, motion controls, and that satisfying click when the joy-cons slid into place. Now, as rumors swirl about an upcoming Switch 2, I have a simple request for Nintendo: resist the urge to overcomplicate things with gimmicks and just give us more of what we love with improved specs.
Nintendo has a history of fixing what isn’t broken, and the Wii U was a prime example. The wildly successful Wii was followed by a confusing tablet-based console that struggled to attract developers. The GameCube also deviated from the norm with its design and disc format, falling behind competitors. While innovation isn’t inherently wrong, Nintendo’s constant reinvention can be unsettling.
In contrast, Sony and Microsoft have maintained consistency in their consoles, allowing gamers to enjoy a familiar experience. My concern is that the Switch 2 might veer too far from what makes the original great. The Switch’s portability is its essence, offering a fantastic gaming experience on the go with decent battery life and impressive graphics. With Nintendo’s history, who knows if the Switch 2 will feature buttons replaced by winches and levers or turn into a snap band you wear like an Omnitrix? It may sound exaggerated, but Nintendo’s penchant for innovation knows no bounds.
Of course, the Switch isn’t perfect, even from a hardware perspective. We desperately need an upgrade in specs and a resolution to the joy-con drift issue, which has plagued many users. Fortunately, there are reports that Nintendo plans to address this problem with patented magnetic analog stick technology, a promising sign that they’re listening to their community.

I also hope for an improved eShop. The marketplace has become a chaotic sea of shovelware and mockbusters, drawing unflattering comparisons to Steam’s unruliness. If Nintendo can clean up its storefront while continuing to deliver top-notch first-party titles, not much else needs changing on the software front.
The Switch stands out as an exceptional console, not necessarily because it’s the one I use most or has the most of my favorite games, but because its hardware genuinely enhances the gaming experience. Playing incredible games on a console that’s both portable and enjoyable to use elevates it above the competition. While I’m not a stickler for specs, they’re the primary improvement I want to see in a sequel device, along with fixes for drift and the eShop’s regulation issues. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
