Persona 3 Reload Persona 5's Baton Pass mechanic

Persona 3 Reload has undoubtedly struck gold with the inclusion of Persona 5’s Baton Pass mechanic. This nifty addition enhances the gameplay experience and significantly ramps up the party’s damage output.

While the Baton Pass is an exciting feature, it’s impossible to ignore the potential that Persona 3 Reload left untapped. The game missed a golden opportunity to introduce Persona 5’s Confidant system, which could have provided unique bonuses and a profound sense of empowerment for players.

Incorporating the Confidants into Persona 3 Reload might have presented some challenges due to Social Links concluding their arcs and moving on. Nevertheless, this addition could have injected a whole new layer of depth and variety into the game’s content.

While we can’t deny the appeal of Baton Pass in Persona 3 Reload, it’s hard not to imagine how Persona 5’s signature feature, the Confidants, could have made the game even more thrilling. It’s heartening to see Atlus striving to create the ultimate version of Persona 3, as glimpsed in previous trailers. However, there remain several untapped possibilities that could have taken the game to new heights.

The inclusion of Persona 5’s Baton Pass in Persona 3 Reload introduces an incredibly useful tactical element. This mechanic, first seen in Persona 5, allows characters to pass additional turns they gain from downing an enemy to another party member, thereby bolstering their strength for that turn. It’s a powerful tool, especially for dealing with groups of enemies with varying weaknesses, and it significantly amps up the party’s damage output. It’s undeniably one of the most significant enhancements announced for Persona 3 Reload, and it’s poised to be a game-changer for players. However, there’s another key feature from Persona 5 that deserved attention: the Confidants.

Elevating Social Links to Confidants could have been a game-changer for Persona 3 Reload. Social Links have been a staple in the Persona series, but Persona 5’s Confidant system took them to a whole new level. With Confidants, players not only enjoyed the typical perks associated with an arcana but also gained unique bonuses that were otherwise unattainable. This system made players feel more powerful as they built bonds with the characters, and it added a new layer of complexity to managing one’s time.

The addition of Confidants to Persona 3 Reload could have been a tremendous boon. The game boasts a wide array of Social Links, and many of them could have easily granted the player special Confidant abilities. For instance, Tanaka the salesman might have provided abilities to earn more yen, while Nozomi the gourmet could have helped the player recover more health with food items. With the introduction of Baton Pass as a new mechanic, it’s somewhat disappointing that Persona 3 Reload didn’t update its Social Links in tandem with its combat mechanics.

Admittedly, adding Confidants would have come with its own set of challenges, beyond the game’s commitment to staying true to the original. Many Social Links in the game conclude their stories by leaving for various reasons, like Bebe returning home or Akinari’s unfortunate demise. Any Confidant abilities tied to these characters would have posed logistical difficulties. Furthermore, the introduction of Baton Pass already represents a significant shift in the game’s formula, and incorporating several more features might have complicated the task of rebalancing the game. This might explain why Confidants weren’t integrated into Persona 3 Reload.

In conclusion, Persona 3 Reload is set to benefit immensely from the addition of the Baton Pass mechanic. With an abundance of content to look forward to, fans have ample reason to be excited. Nevertheless, reimagining Social Links as Confidants could have provided the remake with an even greater boost. While Persona 3 Reload has learned from the success of Persona 5, it missed out on one of its most remarkable innovations.

Mark your calendars: Persona 3 Reload will be released on February 2, 2024, available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Don’t miss out!
