In a world where bigger is often better, the Strong National Museum of Play has taken things to the extreme with its latest creation: a 20-foot-tall, fully playable Donkey Kong arcade machine. This enormous masterpiece is set to be unveiled on June 30 as part of the museum’s new 90,000 square-foot-expansion dedicated to the history of video games.

Collaborating with Nintendo, the Strong National Museum of Play has brought to life the world’s largest Donkey Kong arcade game. The sheer scale of the machine is enough to make even the bravest of players quake in their boots. To give you an idea of just how enormous it is, the arcade game is about 370% larger than the original version.

The machine has an aluminum frame with MDF fiberboard, and it will run on a motherboard from an original Donkey Kong arcade machine. Visitors to the museum will be able to see the machine in all its glory from the first-floor welcome atrium. The rendering image of the machine shows it towering over a person standing in front of it, emphasizing just how much of a titan Donkey Kong is in the video game world.

Donkey Kong is a true titan in the video game world—both in terms of character size and the iconic status of the game—so it lends itself perfectly to this playful, whimsical installation,” said Jon-Paul Dyson, PhD, vice president for exhibits at The Strong.

While the thought of playing on such a massive arcade game might seem daunting, fear not. The machine has been designed with regular-sized controls at a pedestal in front of the machine, making it accessible to players of all sizes. However, giant controls on a panel, scaled to the huge machine, will be present for visual effect.

The Strong National Museum of Play’s new video game history exhibit is sure to be a hit with gamers and history buffs alike. The museum already boasts an impressive collection of over 100,000 artifacts relating to play and games, and the expansion is set to add a whole new level of excitement.

In addition to the Donkey Kong arcade game, visitors can look forward to other interactive exhibits, including a game design lab and a classic arcade featuring some of the most iconic video games of all time.

The Strong National Museum of Play is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history of play and games. The museum’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the importance of play is evident in everything they do. From classic board games to cutting-edge video games, the Strong National Museum of Play has something for everyone.
