It’s almost as if a mysterious pact was made over at Warner Bros. Games, as their next-gen titles, including Hogwarts Legacy, the Batman: Arkham trilogy, and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1, are either already available or in the pipeline for the Nintendo Switch. Given this trend, the news of Gotham Knights eventually arriving on the Switch hardly comes as a shock.

Gotham Knights, a game that generated significant anticipation but divided fans with its unique Batman universe, has now become the subject of unexpected speculation. Apparently, characters like Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood are preparing to make their debut on the Switch, a year after a somewhat lackluster release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.

The first hints of this development emerged when the game received a rating for the Nintendo Switch in Singapore. Furthermore, it’s not just a random listing; the ESRB website also shows the same rating, adding weight to the possibility.

However, skeptics have reservations about Gotham Knights’ transition to the Switch, especially considering its performance on platforms like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The Batman: Arkham games set a high bar for what players expect from the Dark Knight on any platform. Those who eagerly anticipated playing as a member of the Batfamily were disappointed by the dated gameplay and mediocre graphics of what was meant to be a next-gen title. The contrast in gameplay and quality was jarring, reminiscent of a Joker jumpscare from Batman: Arkham Asylum. Overall, Gotham Knights felt like a step backward.

Interestingly, this potential move to the Switch comes after the game’s developers canceled the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions to focus exclusively on next-gen platforms. It’s somewhat ironic to envision the same game now adapting to Nintendo’s console, which is notably less powerful.

Some wonder if the listing is referring to the long-rumored Nintendo Switch 2, which supposedly exhibited performance comparable to the PS5 at this year’s Gamescom. This theory gains traction since cloud-based game ports typically don’t receive ESRB ratings.

In any case, the Nintendo Switch has surprised many with its ability to handle next-gen games. Several have already made their way to the platform. The prospect of porting Gotham Knights to the Switch raises the possibility of optimizations and even a performance mode for current-gen versions.

Turn Me Up Games, a respected California-based studio known for optimizing games for Nintendo’s hybrid platform, could potentially be behind this endeavor. Their work on games like the Game of the Year winner, It Takes Two, showcased impressive achievements despite the console’s limitations. With their involvement in porting the Batman: Arkham trilogy to the Switch, it’s reasonable to speculate that Gotham Knights might be their next major project.

Given their extensive experience, Gotham Knights doesn’t appear to be an insurmountable challenge—it’s almost like betting against Batman at this point.
