Despite Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being months away from its launch, exciting news has emerged that an initial draft for its much-anticipated sequel is already in the works.

During the 2023 Tokyo Game Show, Producer Yoshinori Kitase unveiled that a “tentative first draft” has been crafted for the third installment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

“In collaboration with [director] Tetsuya Nomura and [writer] Mr. Nojima, we’ve put together a preliminary draft for the storyline, and it’s already in a polished state, signaling the start of the creative process,” Kitase explained. “However, we’re also committed to incorporating player feedback and responses, which means that aspects of Part 3, including the core concept, may evolve after the release of Part 2 – Rebirth.”

This informative update was graciously provided by the Shinra Archeology Department, a dedicated fan-run Twitter account devoted to all things Final Fantasy 7.

Considering that the first installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy deviated from the original 1997 story, it’s no surprise that the direction of the third installment is subject to change. It’s highly probable that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will continue to offer a fresh take on the game’s narrative.

The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth series has already demonstrated a willingness to break away from established canon. The introduction of the Arbiters of Fate, the spectral guardians of the game’s timeline, and the resolve of Cloud and his companions to challenge these enigmatic entities, all point to Square Enix’s determination to chart a unique course. Part three appears to be no exception, as the developers remain open to revising the original storyline.

Nevertheless, the extent to which “players’ responses and reactions” will shape the final product remains uncertain until Rebirth’s second installment debuts on February 29th next year. The future of this highly anticipated trilogy promises to be a dynamic and player-influenced journey.
