Baldur's Gate 3

While the intricacies of Baldur’s Gate 3 might make a smooth transition to consoles seem unlikely, Larian Studios assures players that the complex RPG has been designed with the PS5 in mind since its inception.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Emily Gera, the product manager, revealed that the Baldur’s Gate 3 PS5 port was “built for PS5 from day one.” She discussed how the development team adapted the game for controller play, with a significant emphasis on radial menus that players can customize to their liking.

Gera explained, “We took the original UI and streamlined it, converting it into radial menus for a more intuitive controller experience. Your essential tools are just a trigger button away, providing quick access to your map, journal, spellbook, character sheet, combat log, alchemy, short rests, long rests, camp, level-up screen, and the Illithid Powers skill tree.”

Game director Swen Vincke also shared insights with PlayStation Access, highlighting the studio’s extensive efforts in transforming the user experience for this port to work seamlessly with a gamepad. The feedback from PC players who’ve already tried it with a controller has been positive.

Players can control their avatar directly using the analog stick, much like a typical third-person game. However, for those who prefer the PC-style point-and-click movement, a mode has been implemented. Vincke noted that the camera has been adjusted to a lower angle for this port, creating a more natural feel that aligns with other console action games. Players can also zoom out with the right stick for a traditional tactical view.

PS5 users can look forward to a few exclusive features, albeit minor ones. The DualSense lightbar will illuminate in sync with the spell being cast, with brightness intensifying during moments of heightened pressure, accompanied by haptic feedback. Status effects will also be represented by distinct DualSense lightbar colors. Notably, the adaptive triggers have gameplay relevance, as a gentle pull reveals a portion of the radial menus, while a firmer press unveils more options.
