In 2023, Microsoft has seen its share of ups and downs, with the Xbox Games Showcase serving as a highlight and the release of the Xbox exclusive, Redfall, hitting a low point.
Despite the game not being a complete disaster, it also didn’t manage to impress players. Xbox boss Phil Spencer even admitted his disappointment with the game’s performance. With Redfall being largely forgettable, it’s surprising to see just how much it has faded into obscurity. The player count on Steam has consistently dipped below double digits, with only six players currently in-game and a peak of just 30 in the past 24 hours – a rather tragic situation.
Considering its all-time peak was a meager 1,560 players, it’s not entirely unexpected, but it does highlight how major game failures can hit hard. We can only speculate about its performance on Xbox, but it’s unlikely to be much better.

Redfall was marketed as a four-player co-op experience, but with so few players left, finding a match has become a daunting task. Such failures have often led to studio closures and layoffs, but Microsoft has assured that Arkane Austin’s fate won’t take that dark turn.

While there hasn’t been an official announcement of their next project, job listings suggest that they’re working on a new single-player title. This is encouraging news, especially for fans of Arkane’s more popular titles like Prey and Dishonored. The job listing explicitly seeks individuals with a background in single-player action role-playing games and immersive sims.
Whatever their next game turns out to be, it’s likely to find more success than Redfall. Let’s hope this ordeal teaches everyone not to press Arkane into making live service games, something they never truly wanted to do in the first place.
